Thoughts around the Global Initiative promoted by Olaseinde Arigbede
People are afraid. They are afraid of being alone. They are afraid of death. Few will admit it, but everyone who has not faced their own mortality and found the other side that exists uniquely for them is afraid.
People are afraid of the death of others. People are afraid of looking under the stairs of their own psyche. Dark things lurk in the unconscious, and the last 10,000 years or more of our history has included a trend towards the more superficial, the material, almost as if we have been slowly condensing from something made of lightness, a brightness, almost insubstantial but created of joy and power, into something solid, controlled, quantifiable, scientific, controlled and of a much lower amperage (power analogy). Alongside this process there has been a kind of slow self-burial which Seinde (Olaseinde) calls a Sarcophagus Existence.
People are afraid of freedom, the responsibility it brings.. what would I do with my time if I didn't have to make a living, bring up children, maintain my life... "Wouldn't Heaven on Earth or some other Utopia, like a planet populated entirely by Buddhas, be boring?" "Don't we need a little conflict, just to keep the soap operas of life ticking over, to add a little spice, to stimulate our brains with the witnessing of disaster? To give us something to work towards..."
No. It is part of the lie imposed upon us by countless cultures, leaders, rulers., despots and fear-mongers. "it is part of human nature" people have told me all my life. I am sorry, I don't see it. I didn't when I was a naive young hippy, and I still do not as a 61 year old experienced man. It is part of human non-nature, it is unnatural to kill, to hurt intentionally, to seek advantage by stepping on the faces or lives of others..
Not even politically motivated murder can dissuade me. I know. You may make of this what you wish, but when I was technically "brain-dead" for a few moments on 21st December 2004 during a heart attack (note the date, the night of the solstice) there was consciousness in a timeless, space-less, identity-less moment with not a molecule of oxygen in the brain of the body to which the witnessing consciousness was anchored. Thereafter, after hours, days, weeks, months, I started to recall being murdered by an angry mob in a place called Antioch, and according to my researches the time-period would have been between 34 and 43 AD. It was not this ' I ', it was another ' I ' but it was the same soul, and that experience was a gift from some higher benefactor to show me the source of all my fear so that I could face it, understand it, process it and now be able to say with joy am in the final stages of overcoming it. It was an insight into the hardened lime-scale that coated my soul, and with it came understandings of the truth and nature, the inclination and purposefulness of this soul that now lives infinitely more peaceably within me.
That is why almost every paragraph starts with the word "people" - not because I am denying my own frailty or setting myself aside from anyone else, but simply because I am not afraid of these things any more. I was blessed that night to approach the gateway to what we call death and return with some indelible insights. Insights that liberate, with some work and some support.
People are hemmed in by fear, and they suppress it. Who do you talk to? We are living in some of the darkest times across the world with war, hunger, poverty, manipulation of the many by the few who have power, and the making invisible of all by such means as economically driven mass media. Their targets include the few who have no temporal power or influence but shine with an inner light, who's eyes are open, who see no other future than to address the problems that face humanity, locally, nationally or globally. That few, those meek, quiet souls who are awakening.
We are also living in a time when there is so much light available from the light of reason and the knowledge to problem-solve, to the light of a single act of kindness or a movement, and ultimately to the light of what I believe is a dawning new age that we can facilitate and to which we will give birth through our consciousness of what is real human work. There is no reason why a person should become so isolated within themselves that they cannot bear the burden of daily existence. We should not leave them on their own. There is very little that cannot be addressed with the right kind of support whether it be medical, humanitarian, caring, compassionate or purely practical. Yet mental and emotional illness is at epidemic proportions within "The First World".
Every baby who is born in the privileged world we know has the capacity to feel the shock that the prince Siddhartha, who later became Gautam Buddha, felt on seeing suffering for the first time, but is protected from it by the banalities of life, the need to achieve personal goals, to satisfy the wishes of their parents that they have a good start in life, but mental health in the developed world is plummeting to an all-time low, young women and men out of university find themselves caught up in a dilemma - do I work within the security of all the opportunities presented to me to shine in my own particular field within a system that compromises my truth, or do I just work in a pub, café or club and hide my BA, B Sc, MA or PhD behind the bar? My answer is be true to yourself, echoing the answers of both Buddha and Hermes Trismegismus, whatever you you do, wherever you begin, and do not forget where you set out to go with your first steps when you have travelled somewhat.
Those of us, young and old, who have a vision, carry with it a responsibility to reach out to others and to say "Do the best you can do with what you have, and if you have a vocation follow it, but be prepared to take some strange turnings along your road in life... do not just conform to the acceptable model..." Believe in your own ability to succeed, to survive, and do not listen to negative fear-driven people. Have compassion for them and wait for them to grow or not. That is their business. You may find them joining you at some unexpected junction or turning in the road. But do not give up, ever.
