Recognizing a Bully in the Workplace
By Frank T. Scruggs
August 2009
Suzy Fox and Lamont E. Stallworth in their 2005 research study addressed the issue of bullying in the workplace, specifically as experienced by ethnic and racial minorities. Their research paid attention to expressions of bullying whether or not the bullying behavior was overt or subtle; when directed at ethnic and racial minorities they termed this type of bullying as racial/ethnic bullying. These researchers applied the te…

Conspiracy theories and Swine Flu have been on our minds at POORMagazine. The state of health care in America, folks buying cheaper medicine from Canada (the Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex ranting and raving about not being able to afford to do research and development to save us from doom if this is allowed), and a whole host of other problems that hurt poor people the most—the truth is that Capitalism is the only conspiracy theory you need.
The word “conspiracy” or “conspire” comes from a…

Obama/Race/Gay Rights
After November 4th, 2008, thousands marched in San Francisco’s streets to Dolores Park to protest passage of Proposition 8, and folks raised hell elsewhere in solidarity. I came out somewhat ambivalently on these electronic pages to register displeasure with both oppresssion of Queer America and Queer America’s foibles. My thoughts on Gay Marriage as a hot push-a-lot-of-somebodies’-buttons issue needed some tweaking and I have most definitely tweaked. Hopefully productiv…

Race, Class and Proposition 8
PART I: RACE AND…
Avoiding Gay Pride events is easy. I hate excessive commercialization and cooptation of any movement that is an engine driving real social justice change. Also, sexual minorities are non-white and poor too, though you wouldn’t know it the way the gay rights struggle is shaped and fought. However, looking in the mirror would be damned difficult if I didn’t go to San Francisco’s Dolores Park November 7th, 2008.
November 4th a majority of Califor…

Part 1: Hmmmm…
Who knows what lurks in the links of the internet’s websites? I’m not The Shadow, but on weekends I can be an amateur Space Cadet and the rest of the week a pretty good part-time Professional Procrastinator—which is why it took me a month to proceed from seeing The Tenderloin National Forest (TNF) on-line (while surfing links linked to the website of the literary arts Luggage Gallery storefront) to discovering it on the way home from mostly unsuccessful hunting for free 3 or 4x-…

February 6th, 2009, was a good day in the San Francisco Bay Area for 29 people, 28 of them arrested during protests inspired by the shooting death of Oscar Grant by Johannes Mehserle of the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit public transit system) Police security force. Charges were dropped in their cases.
Charges were also dropped in the case of Dee Allen, an anarchist activist, ally and friend to many, arrested July 30th, 2008, during a protest in San Francisco countering the presence of the anti-i…

For us in Better World Cameroon, the One World Spirit is not just a phrase. it a way of life.that is why we are calling on change of life style of youth for peace and a clean environment. For me, World Family is a Place to Begin.
In order for us to creat a Better World, we must think with a one world spirit, that is, looking at the world as a Global Village, a situation where one's troubles are the trobles of the others.

CUT ME, DO I NOT BLEED PROPERTY VALUE?
April 8th, 2009, San Francisco’s Channel 7 News told me about the cutting of fiber optic cables in the South Bay Area. I marveled that someone knew exactly where to go to wreak havoc, cause chaos, eff the most s**t up, do electronically what Critical Mass does with bicycles every last Friday of the month in San Francisco: make ordinary daily activities some take for granted difficult or impossible for a short time.
A spokeswoman interviewed about the inc…

Here is a link to an article from All Africa about the Nigerian government embracing GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and the opposition for groups including Environmental Rights Action. I am not sure of how the role of USAID here relates to food sovereignty, as many of their programmes are about producing food for export.

I am writing on my own here, but in some senses on behalf of others who are also quite busy. I just feel at this moment very close to my brothers and sisters in Nigeria, Cameroon, India, USA, Gambia and all those who I do not yet know, and especially a brother near Gaza who is desperately trying to get in to render medical assistance.
Jocelyn Jones, Tom Lines and myself met today to discuss ways forward for World Family, how we can incorporate ourselves to raise funds, what activities we are en…

The 2008 Presidential Campaign
By Frank T. Scruggs, M.A., Ph.D. Candidate
May 2008
Needless to say, the 2008 campaign for the Presidency of the United States is an unprecedented historical event. In this particular race, the campaign itself has come to be a symbolic race of the previously disenfranchised; blacks and women to the pinnacle of government leadership. The image of the President of the United States has moved beyond a white males only club to a genuinely open contest.
The ascension…

The Perception Black Men in North America
Frank T. Scruggs, M.A., Ph.D. Candidate
April 2008
What’s going on with Black Men, today? Among the social problems contributing to dismal statistics are racism, a decline of manufacturing jobs, faulty school systems, lack of parenting and other systemic issues that need to be addressed. One perception is that Black men are endangered; often portrayed as criminals, rapists and brutes.
In truth, what are Black men really like? Well, we are sure that ET…

Human Rights, Not Just For Men
